§ 169A.37 — License Plate Impoundment Violation Crimes

Plain-Language Summary

It is a misdemeanor to violate a license plate impoundment order, including driving a vehicle with impounded plates, filing false statements, removing impoundment stickers, or letting the former owner drive the vehicle during the impoundment period.

Practical Notes
If your plates have been impounded due to a DWI, you must follow the order. Driving the vehicle (unless it has special coded plates), removing impoundment stickers, or filing false statements are all separate crimes.
