§ 16B.581 — Distinctive Tax-exempt License Plates

Plain-Language Summary

This law requires state-owned or state-leased vehicles to display special tax-exempt license plates. The commissioner designs the plates with the registrar's approval. Registration costs $20 for the administrative fee plus $10 for two plates, and the registration lasts for the life of the vehicle or until the state no longer owns it.

Practical Notes
When the state acquires a vehicle that previously had local government plates, it pays a reduced $10 administrative fee plus the cost of replacement plates. The distinctive plates identify the vehicle as state property and exempt it from vehicle taxes. Some vehicles may be exempt from displaying these plates under section 168.012.
