2025 Session Last amended: 2025 session

§ 204B.07 — Nominating Petitions

Plain-Language Summary

Candidates who are not running through a major political party must collect voter signatures on a nominating petition. The petition must state the office sought, the candidate's name and address, and their political party or principle. Each person who signs the petition must swear they will not vote in the primary for that office. Lying on a petition is perjury.

Practical Notes
Minor party and independent candidates use nominating petitions instead of the primary election process. The petition cannot use a major party name, but can use the word ‘independent.’ Presidential elector candidates have special petition rules allowing a full slate to be nominated on one petition.
