§ 204B.46 — Mail Elections; Questions

Plain-Language Summary

Counties, cities, and school districts can hold special elections by mail when only questions (not candidates) are on the ballot. Ballots are mailed to all registered voters at least 14 days before the election. A ballot board reviews returned ballots and marks them as accepted or rejected.

Practical Notes
Mail elections for ballot questions like school levies or bond issues are common in Minnesota. Voters who are not registered when ballots are mailed can still get a ballot through the absentee process. Rejected ballots can be replaced if there is enough time before the election.
