§ 206.86 — Counting Electronic Voting System Results

Plain-Language Summary

After polls close, election judges secure the voting machines, count ballot cards, and verify the number matches the voter register. Write-in votes are counted separately. Ballot cards are sealed and transported to the counting center by two judges from different parties. Damaged ballots are duplicated and counted by two judges from different parties.

Practical Notes
The chain of custody for ballots is strictly controlled. Two judges from different political parties must transport ballots together. Damaged ballot cards must be duplicated with both parties present, and each duplicate is labeled and serial-numbered. The final count from automatic equipment, plus write-in and absentee votes, makes up the official return.
