§ 206.80 — Electronic Voting Systems

Plain-Language Summary

Electronic voting systems must allow every voter to vote in secret, vote for all candidates and questions they are entitled to, write in candidates, and verify their choices before casting their ballot. The system must produce a permanent paper ballot that can be used in a recount.

Practical Notes
This is a key voter protection law. Every electronic voting system must create a paper trail that can be recounted. Systems purchased after June 2005 must use optical scan technology or create a paper ballot. Voters must be able to review and correct their ballot before it is counted.
