§ 216B.421 — Homestead; Option of Electric Service

Plain-Language Summary

If a customer's homestead has buildings or structures located in more than one assigned electric service area, the customer may elect to buy all of their electric service from either of the utilities serving the property. A utility may extend its facilities through another utility's assigned area when needed to connect a customer who makes this election. This option applies only to buildings and structures that were under construction on April 11, 1974.

Practical Notes
This option is narrow: it applies only to buildings and structures that were under construction on April 11, 1974. Homeowners whose qualifying buildings cross utility service-area boundaries can pick one of those utilities to serve their entire homestead.
