§ 242.19 — Disposition of Juvenile Offenders

Plain-Language Summary

This law describes what the Commissioner of Corrections can do with a child committed by a juvenile court for delinquency. Options include confining the child at the Red Wing correctional facility or a group foster home, releasing the child on parole with conditions, re-confining or re-paroling the child, and eventually discharging the child when rehabilitated. The commissioner can also order the return of any juvenile who runs away or escapes.

Practical Notes
If your child has been committed to corrections through juvenile court, the commissioner has broad power over placement decisions, including confinement, parole, and foster care. Parents may be ordered to pay foster care costs based on their ability to pay. Juveniles who run away or violate conditions can be taken back into custody by any peace officer with a written order from the commissioner.
