§ 256R.22 — Case Mix Adjusted Total Payment Rate

Plain-Language Summary

The commissioner calculates a case mix adjusted payment rate for each resident classification. The direct care portion of the rate is multiplied by the case mix index for that classification. Higher-need residents have a higher case mix index, so the facility gets paid more per day for their care.

Practical Notes
Case mix adjustment ensures facilities are paid more for residents who need more care. Only the direct care portion is adjusted by case mix. Other care-related costs, other operating costs, external fixed costs, and property costs are the same regardless of the resident’s classification.
