§ 259.35 — Notice to Adoptive Parents

Plain-Language Summary

Requires adoption agencies to give prospective adoptive parents written notice that they will assume all the rights and responsibilities of birth parents upon adoption, including financial support and care for health and behavioral problems.

Practical Notes
Before an adoption study begins, the agency must give you a written notice explaining that adoptive parents take on the same responsibilities as birth parents, including financial support. Except for subsidized adoptions of children with special needs, adoptive parents are not eligible for special state or federal financial assistance beyond what any birth parent could receive.
