§ 259.83 — Postadoption Services

Plain-Language Summary

Requires adoption agencies to provide postadoption services including assistance with obtaining medical and social history, searching for birth relatives, sharing health information, and providing birth parent identifying information to adopted persons aged 18 and older.

Practical Notes
If you were adopted in Minnesota and are 18 or older, you can request your birth family’s social and medical history and identifying information about your birth parents from the agency that handled your adoption. The agency must complete a search within six months. You also have the right to obtain your original birth record under section 144.2253. Agencies may charge a reasonable fee for these services.
