§ 260D.08 — Annual Review

Plain-Language Summary

After the permanency review hearing, a child in voluntary foster care for treatment must have court review at least every 12 months for as long as the child remains in foster care. At each review, the court checks whether the agency has made reasonable efforts toward a permanent plan for the child, including supporting the parent's involvement, strengthening family ties, and planning for the child's life after turning 18.

Practical Notes
Annual reviews are an ongoing check to make sure children do not stay in foster care indefinitely without active planning for their future. Parents should attend these reviews and document their involvement and participation in planning. The court can require the agency to take additional steps if it finds efforts to achieve permanency are insufficient.
