§ 268.07 — Benefit Account

Plain-Language Summary

To receive unemployment benefits, you must file an application and establish a benefit account. Your weekly benefit amount is based on your wages during the base period (generally the four most recent completed calendar quarters). The maximum you can receive is 26 weeks of benefits or one-third of your total base period wages, whichever is less.

Practical Notes
When this applies: When you first apply for unemployment benefits in Minnesota. Who this affects: All Minnesota workers applying for unemployment. Key points: You must be unemployed when you file. Your application is effective the Sunday of the week you filed, and can be backdated one week if you request it within 7 days. Your weekly benefit is the higher of: 50% of your average weekly base period wage (up to 66-2/3% of the state average) or 50% of your high quarter weekly wage (up to 43% of the state average). To establish a new benefit account after a previous one expires, you must have worked and earned wages in at least one calendar quarter after the prior account started. You can appeal a benefit account determination within 45 calendar days.
