§ 275.16 — County Auditor to Fix Amount of Levy

Plain-Language Summary

This section directs the county auditor to reduce a local government's tax levy if it exceeds the legal limit. However, levies for paying off bonds and court judgments must be extended in full, and only the remaining levies are reduced.

Practical Notes
If your local government tries to levy more property taxes than the law allows, the county auditor will cut the levy down to size. Bond payments and court judgments get priority and are always fully funded, while other spending gets reduced.
