§ 276.04 — Notice of Rates; Property Tax Statements

Plain-Language Summary

This law sets out what must be included on your property tax statement. The statement must show taxes owed to each taxing authority separately, including county, state, school district, city or township, and special taxing districts. Tax statements for real property must be mailed by March 31 each year, and property owners may request to receive statements electronically.

Practical Notes
Your annual property tax statement is the primary document showing what you owe and to which government entities. Review it carefully to see your property’s estimated market value, homestead exclusion if applicable, and the breakdown of which agencies receive your tax dollars. If you did not receive a statement, contact your county treasurer — the failure to mail a statement does not cancel the tax obligation.
