§ 276.11 — When Treasurer Shall Pay Funds From May Settlement

Plain-Language Summary

After the May settlement, the county treasurer must promptly pay each town, city, school district, and special taxing district its share of collected taxes. Non-school taxing districts can request at least 70% of estimated collections within 30 days of settlement. School districts receive payments in two installments. Counties that delay payments beyond 45 days owe 8% annual interest, which taxing districts can recover by lawsuit if necessary.

Practical Notes
Cities, townships, and school districts depend on this payment process for operating revenue. Taxing districts that believe they received an incorrect or inadequate payment can appeal to the county board. If the county consistently underpays or delays distributions, the affected taxing district has a right to bring a civil action to recover the full amount plus interest.
