§ 325E.66 — Insurance Claims for Residential Contracting Goods and Services

Plain-Language Summary

Prohibits residential contractors (roofers, builders, remodelers) from offering to pay a homeowner's insurance deductible as an inducement to hire them, from providing repair agreements without a good-faith itemized estimate, and from interpreting insurance policies or adjusting claims without a public adjuster license.

Practical Notes
This statute targets storm-chasing contractors who offer to ‘waive your deductible’ after hail or wind damage. If a contractor violates this section, the insurer is not obligated to consider the contractor’s estimate. Both the homeowner and the insurer may sue the contractor for damages. The Commissioner of Labor and Industry also enforces this law.
