§ 354A.36 — Permanent Disability Benefits

Plain-Language Summary

This section provides disability benefits to coordinated members of the St. Paul Teachers Retirement Fund who become totally and permanently disabled. To qualify, a member must be vested and have an average salary of at least $75 per month. The disability benefit equals the normal retirement annuity without any reduction for early retirement. The fund's board determines disability based on reports from at least two medical experts. Disability recipients must undergo regular medical exams and may have benefits reduced if they receive workers' compensation.

Practical Notes
If you are a vested teacher who becomes totally and permanently disabled, you may qualify for a disability benefit equal to your full retirement annuity with no early retirement reduction. You must apply through the board and be examined by at least two medical experts. Be aware that the board can require regular medical check-ups, and if you are found to no longer be disabled, your benefits will stop. If you return to partial employment, your disability benefit will be reduced so your total income does not exceed your former salary.
