§ 355.02 — Agreements

Plain-Language Summary

This section gives the PERA director authority to make agreements with the federal government to extend Social Security benefits to Minnesota state and local government employees. It also covers how interstate agencies can join, which groups of public employees must be covered, and how referendums work to add new groups.

Practical Notes
If your local government or special authority wants Social Security coverage for its employees, it must submit a formal resolution and hold a referendum. Employees who vote for coverage in a referendum may also be able to get retroactive coverage and pay the required back taxes.
