2025 Session Last amended: 2024 session

§ 363A.07 — Local Commissions

Plain-Language Summary

Cities and counties in Minnesota can create their own local human rights commissions to handle discrimination complaints. A person who believes they have been discriminated against can choose to file with either the local commission or the state Department of Human Rights, but not both. If the local commission does not resolve the case within 45 days, the person can withdraw and file a lawsuit in court.

Practical Notes
Some cities like Minneapolis and St. Paul have their own human rights departments. You must choose where to file – once you pick one, you cannot file the same complaint with the other.
