§ 379.02 — Towns, Change of Boundaries and Names

Plain-Language Summary

The county board can change town boundaries, split a town, merge parts of towns, or create new towns when at least 20 voters in the affected area petition for it. A town generally cannot be reduced below 36 square miles unless it keeps at least 25 voters and $30,000 in assessed property value. The county auditor must notify the state demographer of changes.

Practical Notes
If you want to change your town’s boundaries, you need 20 voters in the affected area to sign a petition. To reduce a town below 36 square miles requires a two-thirds petition of voters. The county must estimate the population impact and have it certified by the state demographer.
