§ 424A.01 — Membership in a Firefighters Relief Association

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets out who is eligible to join a firefighters relief association in Minnesota. To be eligible, a firefighter must be a member of the fire department and serve as a volunteer or paid on-call firefighter, be trained or qualified in fire suppression or prevention duties, and not be barred from membership under the chapter's rules. Volunteer emergency medical personnel may also be eligible in some circumstances.

Practical Notes
Membership eligibility is a threshold requirement for receiving any retirement benefits from a relief association. Firefighters who work part-time or full-time for compensation may not be eligible to join a relief association and must look to other public employee retirement systems instead. Disputes about eligibility should be directed to the association’s board of trustees, which has the authority to determine membership.
