§ 43A.121 — Ranking of the Applicant Pool

This section sets the order for ranking applicants for state jobs. People on layoff lists are ranked according to their collective bargaining agreement. All other applicants are ranked by veteran's preference, with ties broken alphabetically.
43A.121 RANKING OF THE APPLICANT POOL.
Applicants referred from a layoff list shall be ranked as provided in the collective bargaining agreement or plan established under section 43A.18, under which the layoff list was established. All other names in an applicant pool shall be ranked according to the veteran’s preference provisions of section 43A.11, subdivision 7. If any ties in rank remain, those names shall appear in alphabetical order.

Practical Notes
When you apply for a state position, your place on the list depends on layoff status and veteran’s preference. Veterans rank higher than nonveterans, and disabled veterans rank highest.
