§ 453.54 — Municipal Power Agencies; Powers

Plain-Language Summary

A municipal power agency has many powers, including the ability to buy, build, and operate power generation and transmission facilities. It can make contracts, hire employees, sue and be sued, and do anything necessary to carry out its purpose of providing electric energy.

Practical Notes
Municipal power agencies have broad authority similar to other government bodies. They can enter contracts for up to 50 years, own property inside or outside Minnesota, and work with other utilities. Their activities are considered essential government functions, which gives them certain legal protections.
