§ 484.03 — Writs

Plain-Language Summary

This section gives Minnesota district courts the authority to issue a wide range of legal orders and writs, including injunctions, habeas corpus, mandamus, certiorari, and writs to stop a nuisance. These tools allow courts to compel action, stop harmful conduct, or review decisions made by other officials and bodies. Any judge of the court may order these writs to be issued.

Practical Notes
These writs are powerful legal tools that lawyers use in many types of cases. For example, a writ of habeas corpus challenges an unlawful imprisonment, a writ of mandamus forces a government official to perform a required duty, and an injunction can stop a nuisance from continuing. Understanding that district courts can issue all of these helps people know where to go when they need immediate court intervention.
