§ 508A.85 — Changeover From Cpt to Certificate of Title

Plain-Language Summary

Five years after the first CPT is issued, the registrar cancels the CPT and issues a regular certificate of title. This conversion happens automatically. The certificate of title gives the owner stronger protection than the CPT because the five-year claim period has expired.

Practical Notes
After five years, your CPT automatically converts to a full certificate of title. This is the strongest form of title available under Minnesota law. At that point, prior claims that were not raised within the five-year window are permanently barred.
