§ 514.01 — Mechanics, Laborers and Material Suppliers

Plain-Language Summary

Establishes who can claim a mechanic's lien in Minnesota. Anyone who performs labor, furnishes materials or machinery, or provides engineering or surveying services for an improvement to real property has a lien on both the improvement and the land.

Practical Notes
This is the foundational statute for construction liens in Minnesota. Contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers, and laborers all qualify. The lien attaches to both the structure and the underlying land. Note that the scope is broad – it covers not just buildings but also grading, excavating, landscaping, utilities, and sidewalk work.
