§ 514.011 — Notice

Plain-Language Summary

This section requires contractors to give property owners a written notice about lien rights before work begins. Subcontractors must also notify the owner within 45 days of first providing labor or materials. The notices warn owners that unpaid workers or suppliers may file a lien on the property.

Practical Notes
If you hire a contractor to improve your property, they must give you a notice explaining that subcontractors and suppliers can place liens on your property if they are not paid. Subcontractors must also send you a notice within 45 days of starting work. Without these notices, lien rights may be lost.
