§ 518.157 — Parent Education Program in Proceedings Involving Children

Plain-Language Summary

When parents cannot agree on custody or parenting time, the court will order both parents to attend at least 8 hours of a parent education program. The program teaches parents how divorce affects children and how to resolve parenting disputes. Parents may attend in person or online.

Practical Notes
When this applies: During any divorce, custody, or parenting time case in Minnesota where parents have not reached an agreement. Who this affects: Parents of minor children in Minnesota family court proceedings. Key points: You must complete the program before your initial case management conference and within 30 days of the first filing. If there has been domestic abuse, the court will not make both parents attend the same session. The court can impose sanctions (penalties) if you do not complete the program. You can also attend voluntarily even before filing a case.
