§ 518A.82 — Contribution by Parents

Plain-Language Summary

This section allows the county to seek child support from parents whose children are placed in foster care or other out-of-home settings. Parents remain financially responsible for their children even when the children are not in their care.

Practical Notes
When this applies: When a child is placed in foster care or another out-of-home setting. Who this affects: Parents whose children are in county-funded care. Key points: If your child is placed in foster care or another out-of-home placement, the county can require you to pay child support to help cover the cost of care. The amount is calculated using the same guidelines as other child support cases.
