Key points: The personal representative must publish a notice to creditors in the local legal newspaper for two consecutive weeks. Known creditors must also be sent direct notice by mail within three months. Creditors generally have four months from the published notice to file claims. If the deceased received Medical Assistance or state hospital care, special notice must be given to the commissioner of human services, and no estate property can be distributed for 70 days after that notice.
