§ 571.924 — Garnishment Exemption Notice

Plain-Language Summary

Requires the creditor to send the debtor a garnishment exemption notice at least 10 days before serving a wage garnishment summons. The notice must inform the debtor of their right to claim an exemption and the consequences of bad-faith claims. A new notice is required if more than one year passes since the last garnishment.

Practical Notes
You must receive this 10-day advance notice before your wages can be garnished. If you receive it, respond promptly by claiming any exemptions that apply (for example, if you receive government assistance). Even if you do not respond, you do not permanently waive your exemption rights, but acting within the 10-day window can prevent the garnishment from starting.
