§ 550.37 — Property Exempt

Key points: These exemptions protect your basic necessities from creditors. Your household goods up to $12,150, jewelry up to $3,308, and one motor vehicle up to $10,000 are protected. Farm equipment up to $13,000 and work tools up to $13,500 are protected. Most of your earnings are exempt from garnishment. All government assistance based on need (SNAP, MFIP, medical assistance) is fully exempt. Retirement accounts are protected up to $81,000 plus amounts needed for family support. Exempt earnings stay exempt for 20 days after deposit in a bank. In bankruptcy, there is an additional $1,500 wildcard exemption for any property. Dollar amounts are adjusted periodically for inflation.
