§ 5B.06 — Voting by Program Participant; Absentee Ballot

Plain-Language Summary

This section allows Safe at Home participants to register as permanent absentee voters through the secretary of state. The secretary of state determines the correct precinct for the participant, obtains or prepares the ballot, and mails it to the participant. The participant's name and address are not listed in the voter registration system.

Practical Notes
Program participants can still vote in all elections without revealing their address. The secretary of state handles the entire process of getting the right ballot to participants and returning completed ballots for counting, while keeping the participant’s location confidential.
