§ 609.06 — Authorized Use of Force

Plain-Language Summary

Describes when a person in Minnesota may legally use reasonable force against another person. Covers self-defense, defense of others, defense of property, law enforcement actions, parents disciplining children, and teachers restraining students to prevent harm.

Practical Notes
This is Minnesota’s general self-defense law. You may use reasonable force to protect yourself or someone else from an attack. The force must be proportional to the threat. Parents may use reasonable physical discipline on children, but anything excessive may be charged as malicious punishment under section 609.377. This section does not allow deadly force; see section 609.065 for when deadly force is permitted.
