2025 Session Last amended: 2009 session

§ 609.10 — Sentences Available

Plain-Language Summary

Lists the sentencing options available for felony convictions. Courts can impose life imprisonment, a fixed prison term, a fine, restitution to the victim, a local correctional fee, or a combination of these. Fines and restitution are due on the date imposed unless the court sets a payment plan.

Practical Notes
Restitution includes payment to the victim, their family, or a victim assistance program. It can also cover losses to government entities. If a defendant cannot pay both restitution and a fine, the court can order that restitution be paid first.
