2025 Session Last amended: 1998 session

§ 609.215 — Suicide

Plain-Language Summary

Makes it a crime to help someone commit suicide, punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Helping with an attempted suicide carries up to 7 years. Health care providers who manage pain or withdraw life support in compliance with the law are not guilty under this section.

Practical Notes
This does not criminalize suicide itself, only assisting someone else. Doctors and nurses can prescribe pain medication even if it may hasten death, as long as the intent is not to cause death. Family members can seek a court order to stop someone they believe is about to help another person commit suicide.
