2025 Session Last amended: 1986 session

§ 609.24 — Simple Robbery

Plain-Language Summary

Simple robbery means taking someone's property from them or while they are present by using or threatening force. The person must know they are not entitled to the property. This is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a fine up to $20,000, or both.

Practical Notes
This is the basic robbery charge in Minnesota. It differs from theft because it involves the use or threat of force. More serious forms of robbery, such as armed robbery, are charged under section 609.245 with higher penalties. Even threatening force without actually hurting anyone can lead to a robbery conviction.
