§ 609.282 — Labor Trafficking

Plain-Language Summary

Labor trafficking is a serious felony in Minnesota. If the victim dies, the penalty is up to 25 years in prison. If the victim is under 18, the trafficking goes on for a long time, or the victim suffers great bodily harm, the penalty is up to 20 years. In all other cases, the penalty is up to 15 years. The victim's consent is not a defense.

Practical Notes
Minnesota treats labor trafficking as one of its most serious crimes. The fact that a victim agreed to work or is an adult does not protect the trafficker from prosecution. Penalties increase based on the severity of harm and vulnerability of the victim. This law works alongside federal trafficking statutes.
