2025 Session Last amended: 1986 session

§ 609.42 — Bribery

Plain-Language Summary

Bribery is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. It is a crime to offer money or benefits to a public official to influence their actions, or for an official to accept such payments. It also covers bribing witnesses and accepting money to not report or prosecute a crime. A public officer convicted of bribery loses their office permanently.

Practical Notes
Both the person offering the bribe and the official accepting it can be charged. The bribe does not have to be cash; it can be any benefit the official is not legally entitled to receive. A public officer convicted of bribery is permanently barred from holding any public office in Minnesota. Witness tampering through bribery is also covered by this statute.
