2025 Session Last amended: 2025 session

§ 609.48 — Perjury

Plain-Language Summary

Perjury means making a false statement under oath or affirmation when you do not believe it to be true. This includes lying in court proceedings, on sworn documents, or in any other situation where the law requires an oath. It is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Practical Notes
Perjury is a serious crime that undermines the justice system. The false statement must be about a material (important) matter. It does not matter if the oath was administered improperly or if the person was not technically required to testify. Contradictory statements under oath can also be charged as perjury.
