§ 609.494 — Solicitation of Juveniles

Plain-Language Summary

It is a crime for an adult to persuade, conspire with, or help a minor commit a crime. The penalty matches the level of the intended crime, up to half the maximum sentence for felonies. This charge can be added on top of the underlying crime, and sentences can run consecutively.

Practical Notes
This law specifically targets adults who recruit or use children to commit crimes. It recognizes that minors are more vulnerable to manipulation. The fact that both the solicitation and the underlying crime can be punished separately serves as a strong deterrent.
