§ 609.666 — Negligent Storage of Firearms

Plain-Language Summary

A person who stores or leaves a loaded firearm where a child under 14 could access it may be guilty of a gross misdemeanor if the child uses the firearm to cause injury or death.

Practical Notes
This law promotes responsible gun storage around children. It applies when a child actually gains access to the firearm and someone is hurt. The law does not apply if the child obtained the firearm through an unlawful entry.
