§ 62H.01 — Authority to Jointly Self-insure

Plain-Language Summary

Two or more private employers in Minnesota can join together to self-insure their employees' health, dental, and disability benefits. Employers who join must stay in the plan for at least three years. The joint plan must cover at least 1,000 people and meet all state requirements.

Practical Notes
This option is mainly used by groups of employers who want to pool their resources to provide health benefits without buying traditional insurance. If your employer is part of a joint self-insurance plan, the plan still must follow Minnesota insurance laws. Employers who leave early may face financial penalties.
