§ 67A.01 — Number of Members Required, Property and Territory

Plain-Language Summary

This law says that at least 25 people who own property worth a total of $50,000 or more in nearby counties can start a township mutual fire insurance company. The company can do business in up to 9 nearby counties, or up to 30 counties if it has enough extra money (surplus). The company can insure property in cities with fewer than 150,000 people.

Practical Notes
If you are insured by a township mutual fire insurance company, this section determines whether the company can legally cover your property based on where you live. Companies that merge can keep covering existing policies even if some are outside the new territory, but cannot renew those out-of-territory policies.
