2025 Session Last amended: 1984 session

§ 1.0431 — Retrocession

Plain-Language Summary

The federal government can give legal authority back to Minnesota over any land it controls in the state. An authorized federal official must make a written offer to the governor. The governor must accept, file a certificate with the secretary of state, and record it with the county.

Practical Notes
This process is called retrocession. It requires action by both the federal government and the state. Local governments where the land is located must be consulted, and once completed, state and local authorities take over governing those areas.
