§ 144E.27 — Education Programs; Director Approval

Plain-Language Summary

This section covers registration, renewal, and discipline for emergency medical responders (EMRs) and ambulance drivers. EMRs must complete an approved training program or have national credentials. Registration must be renewed every two years with a refresher course. The director can deny, suspend, or revoke registration for violations including felony convictions, substance abuse, patient mistreatment, or unprofessional conduct.

Practical Notes
EMRs and ambulance drivers must keep their registration current and can face discipline for a wide range of misconduct. If your registration lapses, you can renew within 48 months by completing a refresher course. Criminal convictions, substance abuse, and sexual misconduct with patients are all grounds for losing your registration. You have the right to a contested case hearing before disciplinary action is finalized.
