§ 148E.106 — Licensed Graduate Social Workers Who Practice Clinical Social Work; Supervised Practice

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets much more intensive supervision requirements for licensed graduate social workers (LGSW) who practice clinical social work. They must complete 200 hours of supervision over 4,000 to 8,000 hours of clinical practice, including at least 1,800 hours of direct client contact. The supervisor must be a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW). After meeting these requirements, the LGSW can apply for an LICSW license.

Practical Notes
LGSWs doing clinical social work are limited to 8,000 hours of supervised clinical practice. After that limit, they must obtain an LICSW license to continue clinical work. The board may grant limited extensions for hardship cases. This pathway takes years and requires careful tracking of both practice hours and supervision hours; supervisees should keep detailed records throughout the process.
