§ 148E.120 — Requirements of Supervisors

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets the qualifications required to serve as a supervisor for social workers in Minnesota. Supervisors must complete 30 hours of training in supervision, must be competent in the activities they supervise, and must attest to meeting the requirements. Clinical supervisors of graduate and independent social workers must also have at least 2,000 hours of experience, including 1,000 hours of post-LICSW clinical practice. The board may approve alternate supervisors in certain situations, such as when there are few qualified supervisors in a rural area.

Practical Notes
Not every experienced social worker qualifies to provide licensing supervision. The 30-hour training requirement is specific and must be documented. In rural areas with few qualified supervisors, a social worker can petition for an alternate supervisor, including supervisors from neighboring states. Supervisors take on real responsibility: they must attest to the supervisee’s competence and ethical practice.
