§ 16B.33 — Designer Selection Board

Plain-Language Summary

This law creates the state Designer Selection Board, which picks architects and engineers for major state building projects. The board has seven members from different professional groups and must select designers for projects costing more than $4 million. The board interviews candidates and makes its selection based on qualifications and past performance.

Practical Notes
Architects and engineers seeking state design work on projects over $4 million must go through this board’s selection process. The board considers past performance on state projects as part of its criteria. Board members with a financial interest in a designer or firm cannot participate in that selection. The University of Minnesota and Minnesota State systems have a slightly different process.
